Business serves Badminton Badminton is a fast, energetic sport when played at the highest level, but it can also be enjoyed by a wide range of people of varying degrees of ability and age and can be a very affordable way to improve your health, fitness and wellbeing, when this is also linked to the business community it provides a great platform for team building initiatives. So on Sunday 30th June, the inaugural Hull Corporate Cup was held at The Hull Badminton Centre on Chanterlands Avenue North were five teams met to compete and represent businesses from the Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire area, they came from Hurst Plastics, Pepperell’s Solicitors, ABL Health and the Civil Service. The tournament was run under the time team format which provides for normal badminton play in singles and doubles, but with the support of a team endeavour. The singles competition got underway just after 10 am with all teams eager to take early advantage of the opposition, with the teams settling well into the tournament and having all completed their first matches, the teams started to get a real feel for the tournament and began to relax and lose any nervous tension that may have built up during the preceding weeks, moving on to play new opposition in matches two and three it because visibly clear that the standard of play between the teams was improving and with lunch time arriving, the competition continued into its final match with all players pushing hard for supremacy over their opponents. A well deserved break in play provided time for teams to reassess their position and recharge the batteries for an energy sapping doubles competition to come. After the singles competition, the Civil Service team held the lead, with ABL Health, the two Hurst Plastics teams and Pepperell’s making up the other places in that order and whilst it’s never nice coming last in any competition, a special mention should go to Pepperell’s for being the most improved team by results during the morning session. After the lunch break and with the pressure of intense competition mounting, one or two players started to feel the strain and with the doubles still to come under the same format a certain flexibility to the tournament regulations had to be exercised and with the teams still to play their four matches the games were reduced to three minutes in length. As the doubles competition got underway it became clear at an early stage that the teams were coming to terms with the doubles format and despite the fatigue some players had felt at lunch, the standard of play had not diminished and in fact the afternoon session was producing some good matches with close results and with all good things the final matches came to an end. With great credit going to every player for the standards produced during the day and with them all enjoying themselves and getting something out of the day, they always has to be a winner and although the other teams tried hard to reel them in, the Civil Service team had become the first winners of the Hull Corporate Cup, taking the other places were ABL Health, Hurst ‘A’ beating Hurst ‘B’ with Pepperell’s coming in last, but again special mention to them for sticking with it and coming through to win two of their doubles matches. The Hull Corporate Cup was a rousing success and was played out by five teams who played badminton for the fun and enjoyment of the day. The Hull Badminton Centre with its purpose built hall and four excellent courts provided the perfect venue. However, tournaments like this cannot be staged without a lot of help, so its thanks to the volunteers for giving up their own time and to the Humber Sport Partnership and Hull City Council Sports Development team for their support during the buildup. With all this year’s teams expressing their interest in competing again, The Hull Corporate Cup will be held next year, building on the great success of this year’s competition it is hoped it will become a firm fixture in Hull’s sporting calendar.
