Busted Fellow Americans, As we find ourselves beginning a new year, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate President Obama on another momentous achievement. Thanks to him and all our friends in Washington D.C., our national debt is now over $18 trillion! According to statistics from the U.S. Debt Clock website (usdebtclock.org), our elected officials (who work for us) are spending over $479 million more than they are taking in! The debt per citizen is over $56,000 and the debt per taxpayer is over $154,000! Needless to say, We, The People, are “busted!” Respectively, the top 3 federal budget items are Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, and Defense spending. According to a Fox News report (foxnews), Obama has increased federal spending by over 70 percent in his six years as president! When he took office in 2009, the national debt was $10.6 trillion. He added roughly $7.3 trillion, making the total $18 trillion! Some people might say I’m too critical of the president. I’ll concede that he is just one man and can’t control what Congress does or doesn’t do. But that’s a good thing. We need separation of powers in our government, as per the Constitution. Ultimately, being the president and leader of this country, I believe he should shoulder the responsibility of burdening our grandchildren with this overwhelming debt. At least that is what an honorable president would do. President Obama had no problem accepting credit for killing Osama Bin Laden and ending the Iraq war, so why doesn’t he accept responsibility for a stagnant economy and crushing debt? If he was a CEO of a private company operating in the red, how long do you think it would take before he was fired? Fortunately, we have a new Congress. Hopefully, they are fiscally conservative. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to ensure they are! Remember, WE are in charge because THEY work for us! Please do your own homework so you can educate others. There is an abundance of information to be found on the U.S. Debt Clock and U.S. Government Spending (usgovernmentspending) websites. Most importantly, we must get involved in all levels of government. As Thomas Jefferson said, “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” May God bless you and the United States of America! Dan Landi Kidder, MO
