Buster Olney on Scherzer to Cardinals: Scherzer grew up as a Cardinals fan and St. Louis has solid resources, which is why there has long been speculation about Scherzer landing alongside Adam Wainwright. But the Cardinals have been a very well-run organization for many years, and one of their operational rules seems to have been to avoid the enormous long-term investments in pitchers. Sure, theyve had multiyear deals with Chris Carpenter and others, but the biggest outlay ever for a pitcher was their five-year, $97.5 million contract with Wainwright. Signing Scherzer might require something close to double that, and the reality is that the Cardinals arent starving for a pitcher like Scherzer. They might have rotation issues, and they are playing in a division inhabited by improving teams such as Pittsburgh and the Cubs, but they dont have to have Scherzer for credibility. Remember, this is a club that let future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols walk away for the sake of payroll management. The Cardinals arent suddenly going to blow up that philosophy to spend huge on a 30-year-old pitcher. The only chance of a Scherzer-Cardinals union could be, theoretically, if Scherzer essentially delivers himself to St. Louis on a below-market contract, the way Boras client Jered Weaver worked out terms to remain with the Angels.
