Busy times at SpacePort things this week here are a few articles covering some of the happenings this week: abqjournal/480939/biz/countdown-to-monday-launch-at-spaceport.html abqjournal/480939/biz/countdown-to-monday-launch-at-spaceport.html lcsun-news/las_cruces-news/ci_26714277/space-symposium-coming-las-cruces-this-week?source=pkg SpacePort is located in Sierra County, New Mexico near Truth or Consequences (T or C) formerly know as Hot Springs, NM. Sierra County is something of a destination location even prior to the arrival of Richard Branson, Ted Turner, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, UP Aerospace and some of the other public names now associated with the county. Space tourism and Eco tourism are new to the county when gauged by local residents whose families have been in this area for many generations and explored or experienced the two largest lakes in the state. Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo Lake are both known for their excellent fishing, water sports and camping. And if you fall into the category of fisherman there are also options of river fishing with Rio Grande River cutting the high desert terrain here. Hunters are no stranger to this area which is plentiful in antelope, elk, mountain lions, oryx, lynx, mule deer, dove, quail, turkey, duck, bear, bobcat, Barbary sheep, javelina, Addax, Ibex, Desert Bighorn sheep and Corisican sheep. If you are a golfer looking for a challenge in Southwest New Mexico take a look at Sierra del Rio golf course a challenge to players of any level or the 9 hole T or C Municipal golf course. Does photography or birding (bird watching) interest you? The Audubon society recognizes five IBAs (Important Birding Areas) either in the city or very near. Sierra county boasts over 520 species of birds which either make their home here, migrate through or come here for breeding each year. Just in case we have not tickled your particular interests there are galleries, artists studio both working and instructional or writing, metal and sculptural here as well as some things for the foodies. Two of the local restaurants are owned by chefs and there are many others who have excellent offerings of unique and local cuisine. We do love our chiles here... it is New Mexico you know. One of the restaurants has been frequently written up for the depth of their wine closet and knowledge of the host. No, we are not giving you all the details because part of the fun here is to find these treasures. And speaking of treasure the hills and mountains around town are glowing with crystals and stones enough to excite the rockhunter in just about anyone. While you are in the higher elevations you might come across the remains or even active sites of miners or treasure hunters who are still following the old treasure maps and stories in search of various forms of wealth. Archeologist and anthropologist will find structure and artifacts to explore and admire. So if you dont enjoy the outdoors, like biking, motorcycles rides, hiking, walking and the natural beauty of the high desert..... this might not be your place. BUT if any of these speak to you - come and see what is hidden here in Sierra County, NM. Now how did that happen.... after all this rambling and there is no mention of museums, ghost towns or hot springs! Ahhhhhhhhhh, hot springs, massage, reflexology, facials, readings of tarot or astrology (locational, esoteric or traditional), Reiki and foot massage are available through the affordable spa located in this treasure of a county at La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa. Come and take the waters and see if any of these make your weekend. Be sure to book ahead even though we are a well-kept secret, it seems the word is getting out and we are grateful to be your host on your journey toward finding your way from inner world to outer space or simply some time to breathe.
