But here’s the problem: Many want their marriage to be ideal, and if there is any ordeal, they want a new deal! Yes many are wander about in a U2 song: I still haven’t found what I’m looking for! Yes, the problem is there is no ideal marriage, just real marriage. Two sinners have married. A man and a woman with fallen natures, living in a fallen world, governed by a fallen angel, have entered the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. But like any Sacrament, the graces of Holy Matrimony are necessary not because things are wonderful, but because they are difficult and often-times hard. Marriage is meant to sanctify but, like baptism, its offered graces gradually unfold and to the degree and speed that the couple cooperate with God’s work.
