But no dialectic worthy of the name establishes a hermetic and Manichean division, but also implies a mobile openness, a transformative spiral. In recent decades of Venezuelan history, the political combat between Chavistas and anti-Chavistas, people and oligarchy, revolutionaries and escualidos, has unleashed an expansive spiral that demolished the myth of the harmonious Venezuela of the past. It is by recognizing this elite nostalgia as the memory of something that only existed through the systematic invisibilization of a large sector of the Venezuelan population, that we can recognize in denunciations of so-called polarization nothing more and nothing less than the appearance in public and political life of Venezuela’s wretched of the earth.
