But panic from the fast collapse of the front lines last week – the first time that the Islamic State had directly and seriously confronted Peshmerga troops – spread quickly even to the regional capital Erbil. Western officials have told The Telegraph they now believe the Peshmerga army to be too weak to be able to stave off an Islamic State advance. If left alone, diplomats say, the entire empire of the Kurdistan Regional Government, which using its oil supplies has been quietly developing greater autonomy from Baghdad, could be overrun. For many of the Peshmerga fighters, it has been more than a decade since they had to hold a weapon.
