But perhaps as much as anything is the disturbing fragmentation of the media. Today, conservatives can get all their information from conservative outlets, and liberals can get all their information from liberal outfits. And you can spend your whole life never being challenged, never having to hear or think about or confront viewpoints that are different from your own. Conservatives literally view it as a kind of a weakness to talk to people other than their own. Nothing would bore me more than to sit around talking and listening to a bunch of liberals all day. Just shoot me. But conservatives never seem to tire of one another. They love to reinforce their beliefs, day after day. This is an interesting generalization, and it is untrue in my experience. Conservatives who are interested in politics read liberal views as well as conservative ones. (Some of them are quite gleeful about fashioning point-by-point rebuttals.) Youve seen me quote from articles by Ruth Marcus, Ezra Klein, Conor Friederdorf; from the /New York Times/, /The Atlantic/, /Mother Jones/, and Politico. I read widely, probably more than I should. There seem to be some liberals who keep tabs on conservative thinkers but not very many. Chaos Manor at jerrypournelle/ is well-worth reading if you want to understand conservative thinking. My colleague and I were just today discussing politics. He said he found it eye-opening that I describe conservatism as being rooted basically in a skepticism about human nature--government is not intrinsically bad, but many people are bad, and bad people in control of large and powerful organizations are worse than bad people in control of weak, local organizations. (Decent people are also less likely to seek and gain control of powerful organizations than ambitious, power-hungry ones.) Apparently hed never heard that self-characterization before, and he is pretty widely-read. I think this author is flattering himself in his comparison with conservatives.
