“But to give you in our conduct, an example to imitate” 2 Thess. 3:9 Daily Reflection for Wed. 27th August, 2014. There is a distinction between preaching and teaching. To preach is to lecture or sermonize. To teach means to educate or instruct. The greatest teachers are those who help you discover, for yourself, lessons to be learned. Jesus, above all else, was an example of his teachings. He “walked the talk” so to-speak. Of course, Jesus did preach in the temple, on the hills and by the sea, yet he also taught by his actions in addition to his words. Paul might have learnt this from Jesus and demonstrates it in the first reading by taking care of his feeding while teaching the Thessalonians dignity in human labour. Unlike Paul, the Pharisees had refused to lead by example, Jesus continues to unleash a number of woes to them. Today, as well as everyday, we are presented with an opportunity to teach. Our “students” are our families, friends, co-workers, those that come into our sphere of influence. May we (like St. Monica) teach by example. “Good example is the most efficacious apostolate. You must be as lighted lanterns and shine like brilliant chandeliers among men. By your good example and your words, animate others to know and love God.” - St. Mary Joseph Rossello (1811-1880).
