Butterflies and Wildflowers of the Wekiva Basin Sunday, October 20, 2013 10 a.m. to noon Wekiwa Springs State Park Trip coordinator: Weegie Henry 407-341-0925 Join the Friends of the Wekiva River on a butterfly and wildflower hunt through longleaf pine sand hill habitat. Expect to see plenty of wildflowers among the wire grass and turkey oaks. Learn about how prescribed fire maintenance creates a thriving understory and restores many features of the forest ecology. Meet at the newly constructed Nature Center Pavilion at Wekiwa Springs State Park, located at the top of the hill, overlooking the spring. Amy Conyers, assistant park manager, will give an introduction to butterfly behaviors. After the brief talk, everyone will board a tram to ride to the best place for the hike. The Friends will supply some free butterfly nature guides to keep as well as plenty of hands-on experience. This field trip is suitable for people of all ages; it will include moderate walking up to ½ mile. The hike is free, but park admission is $6 for a vehicle with two to eight occupants or $4 for a single driver. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, camera, and binoculars are recommended. For more information about the butterfly and wildflower hike, or about the FOWR, go to friendsofwekiva.org or contact Weegie Henry at 407-341-9025.
