Buyers Guide Rant of the Day: Kindle Fire HDX vs. iPad Air. [/begin: nosebleed] While the Kindle Fire HDX has its merits, the stock device does not support Google Play. Android forks such as the Kindle Fire OS are severely limited by this, which is the reason why Amazon created its own App Store for Kindle apps. Unfortunately, their market isnt as robust as Google Plays, let alone Apples AppStore, thus severely limiting the devices usability. They topped 50,000 apps last year. Apple has more than a million apps available since October 22. To me, that means its a waste of a fairly powerful device. Sure, it rocks the latest Snapdragon SoC with a very capable Adreno 330 GPU, but... Fire OS 3.0 is a heavily customized Android fork based off of 4.2 Jelly Bean, which means it doesnt support OpenGL ES 3.0. Without getting too technical, lack of OpenGL ES 3.0 support means you wont get the same kind of graphics performance as the iPad Air on iOS 7. Of course, Im not discouraging anyone from getting the Kindle; to each their own. My point is that having more pixels, being lighter, and being cheaper doesnt necessarily make the HDX the overall winner over the iPad Air. [/end: nosebleed] Ranters note: The ads still funny. Go watch it.
