By 1664 the King of England decided that the Dutch and Swedes were real threats to the English, who were already in New Jersey.King Charles 11 proposed to his brother, the Duke of York (later James 11),that he conquer the territory. On March 20,the King granted to the Duke a patent for a tract of land which included New Jersey. On June 23 and 24 of the same year, the Duke granted the province to John Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. Eventually,Lord Berkeley sold his half to William Penn and his associates.A line was drawn across the state from Litte Egg Harbor to Port Jervis dividing Penns half from Carterets.Penns area became known as West New Jersey and Carterets part as East New Jersey.Later William Penn purchased all of New Jersey. It became the experimental ground for Pennsylvania.
