By ALEXANDRIA ALEJANDRO Originally published on Saturday, August 30, 2014 Share this Email, Facebook, Twitter photo Aaron Salazar is a soccer player by heart. After all, hes been playing the game since he was 3. That changed Friday night when the Victoria East kicker racked up big numbers in the Titans 43-14 non-district win over visiting San Antonio Kennedy at Memorial Stadium. They needed a kicker, said Salazar, who racked up 3 field goals and made good on every extra point for the Titans. Knowing that, I wanted to do something for my school and came out here 100 percent and committed to the team. We expected to win. We are never going to be satisfied. The team gave excellent effort. Were really blessed in the manner Aaron came to us, said East coach Roland Gonzalez. Aaron came to us and he said he wanted to kick for us. It was a great start for the Titans, who begin the 2014 season in Class 30-5A. I cant imagine a better way to start the season, said Gonzalez. If thats indicative of how our season is going to go, its going to be a great year for us. It was a great momentum builder. They came out ready to play tonight. They came out ready within seconds in the first quarter. The Titans explosive offense in the first began at the 11:46 mark. Michael Torres 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown paced the scoring for East in the first quarter. Jonathan Ortega, who returned as the teams quarterback - along with Dillon Lippe - made it 14-0 with just under 9 minutes remaining in the first with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Daytran Evans. Ortega did a great job; him and Bailey Zappe, Gonzalez said. They did a great job moving the ball and scoring. Kennedy answered Easts last score in the first just seconds later with a 44-yard run by Nicholas Gonzales. Ortega made it 20-7 with a 1-yard run. Salazar kicked the extra point and the Titans held a 21-7 lead after the first. The line in front of Salazar also did a great job, Gonzalez said. It was a whole team effort. Salazars 27-yard field goal made it 24-7 with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter. Ortega found Dillon Lippe for a 19-yarder, and Julius Whitby ran in a 1-yard touchdown to for an comfortable 37-7 lead at the half for East.
