By: Chris Nunn For a while, it looked like mother nature was going to play havoc with the racing program at Bloomington Speedway, but as fast as the rain moved into the state, it fizzled out just as fast. Sunny skies and cool temperatures greeted the fans in attendance as they filed into the track. NASCAR stars Kenny Wallace and J.J. Yeley were on hand to race in the Modified and Sprint Car divisions respectively. Chris Babcock and Jordan Kinser made up the front row for the Sprint Car main, with Babcock leading the first lap over Chase Briscoe, who got around Kinser for second. Briscoe then shot under Babcock for the lead on lap two, bringing Kinser with him around Babcock for second. The red flag flew on lap three, as Dickie Gaines took a hard tumble in turn two. He was okay. On the restart, Carson Short moved around Jeff Bland for the fourth spot, then Babcock for third one lap later. The caution flew on lap 7 for Brandon Morin who slowed to a stop in turn two. When racing resumed, Briscoe shot out to a five car lead over Kinser, as Bland moved to fourth around Babcock. Kinser, however, would lose second to Carson Short, before falling out of the event with mechanical issues. By the time Carson Short moved into second, Briscoe had pulled out to a full straight advantage over the field. Behind the leaders, a three way battle for fifth began to take shape between Dakota Jackson, Babcock, and the 18th starting Brady Short. Short would get the spot, and begin to work on Shuman for fourth. Up front, it was all Briscoe, as he made up for the close second place finish earlier this year, winning in his Richard Briscoe owned, Peak AntiFreeze, Hoosier Tire, CSI sponsored #5B over Carson Short, Bland, Brady Short, and Shuman. This was Briscoes last event before he goes back home to North Carolina to pursue his NASCAR career. Sprint car heat winners were Chase Briscoe, Jeff Bland Jr, and Jordan Kinser Lee Hobbs led the first lap of the Super Stock feature from his outside front row starting spot, with Aaron Fields taking second from fourth. The caution flew on lap three, as Tyler Cain stopped outside of turn one. When racing resumed, Hobbs and Fields dueled door to door for the lead, with Hobbs taking the spot on lap six. Fields began to open up a big advantage over Hobbs, as the top five ran single file. The caution flew just before the halfway point, as Travis Howe spun in turn two. Fields started to pull away from Hobbs on the restart, but unfortunately for Hobbs, he pulled out of the race just after the halfway point. This gave the second spot to Fields’ teammate Jim Pfeiffer, who had moved around Steve Peeden. With five laps to go, the result was hardly in doubt, as Fields kept pulling away from the pack. Fields cruised to the win in his Jim Pfeiffer owned, Scott Auto Sales, Pfeiffers Body Shop, Peyton Place Auto Sales, Wetzel Trucking & Excavating, Dasco Race Supply sponsored #25 over Pfeiffer, Peeden, Steve Hollars, and Jamey Wilson. UMP Super Stock heat winners were Aaron Fields and Steve Peeden Jake Humphrey and Devin Gilpin led the modified feature to the green with Gilpin leading lap one over Humphrey and Kenny Wallace. Wallace and Humprey battled for second, with Wallace taking the spot on lap three. Wallace had won his heat race by a full straight over Gilpin earlier in the evening. By lap six, Gilpin had close to a full straight lead on Wallace. Derek Groomer moved to the third spot, getting around Humphrey. The caution flew on lap eight, as a multi car accident occurred in turn two. Gilpin took a three car length lead on the restart and began to build on it immediately on Wallace. Chad Combs and Groomer battled for third, with Combs getting the spot. Combs the moved under Wallace to take second on lap 11. At the halfway point, it was Gilpin, Wallace, Combs, Groomer, and Humphrey. During the battle for second, Gilpin had pulled away to almost a four second lead over Wallace. Gilpin surgically maneuvered through lapped traffic and cruised to his 26th victory of the year in his Don Fleetwood owned, Dasco Race Supply, Mike Shell Racing Engines, A-1 Pallet, Tom Cat Performance, Impressive Race Cars, Blondies Pizza sponsored #1G . Groomer was able to get around Wallace for second at the line. UMP Modified heat winners were Kenny Wallace and Derek Groomer Greg Garrison bolted to the lead at the start of the Hornet feature and immediately pulled away to a half straight lead on lap three. Behind him Dan Morgan, Whitney Baldwin and Matt Hamilton ran three wide for second, with Hamilton taking the spot over Baldwin. Luke Bland, who had to start tenth via handicap for winning the week before, had charged up to sixth at the halfway point. Garrison put a lapped car between himself and the second place car of Hamilton with five laps to go. Hamilton looked to have started to close in on Garrison as there were two laps to go. The caution flew for debris in turn two with just two laps to go. Garrison was able to hold on for the final two laps to take the win in his Greg Garrison owned, Perfection Auto Glass, Mundy Floor Covering, Midwest Cheer, Chad Kinser sponsored #2G over Hamilton, Baldwin, Bland, and Morgan. Bloomington Speedway will be off next Friday, and will be back in action August 15th with the Midwest Sprint Car Series paying $3,000 to win. Points will be doubled for all divisions.
