By: DODA Links Doda, --A great deal of harm has been done to the medical profession in particular and the society in general by private practice of government-employed doctors. Gone are the days when the concept of private practice in young doctors was non-existent, the sole aim then being acquiring knowledge and love of the profession. Although some consultants were doing private practice but we can surely say it never changed their attitude towards teaching and treating. The junior doctors were never used as pawns (as is a standard practice now) to further the finance interests of senior doctors (refer prescription scandal at GB Pant).Doctors then, would report on duty at 9:00 am and never leave before 4:00 pm and the seniors were completely dedicated to teaching the undergraduates and post graduates. These days it is difficult to find a senior doctor at a teaching hospital at 4pm now-a-days. The teaching standard now-a-days are so low (check with MCI) that the doctors coming out of these teaching institutions are unable to do the job they are supposedly trained to do. Now-a-days our brilliant undergraduates never opt for major branches like Surgery, Gynecology or Medicine which have a better academic and sub-specialty scope. They prefer Dermatology, Radiology or Ophthalmology. Why so? Because in these branches there is less binding in government sector and a very handsome income in private sector. Now-a-days they call it a "tension free subject". And as soon as the doctor gets selected for post-graduation he starts with his private practice lest he may lose precious time when he is free to exploit the situation.
