By Eric Kopp Okeechobee News A police report indicated an Okeechobee woman was arrested after she allegedly took a fl at-screen television from a local business then tried to exchange it for another television the next day. Lori Weil Thompson, 50, N.E. Seventh St., was arrested Saturday, May 4, on felony charges of grand theft, dealing in stolen property, possession of a controlled substance (alprazolam) without a prescription and introduction of contraband into a detention facility. Thompson was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of possession of a legend drug without a prescription. She was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail then released on her recognizance at her fi rst-appearance hearing. The report by Offi cer Kelley Margerum, of the Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD), stated that Walmart surveillance video showed Thompson taking a 42-inch Sanyo television Friday evening, May 3. According to the report Thompson tried to pay for the television with a check. But, her check was declined and she was instructed to go to the customer service department. However, the woman reportedly “ ... passed all points of purchase, exited the store and loaded the merchandise ...” into a vehicle in the store’s parking lot, indicated the offi cer’s report. Offi cer Margerum went on to explain that the woman returned to the store the next evening to exchange the Sanyo for a smaller, 32-inch LED Vizio television and some grocery items. Because the cost of the Vizio, $248, and the groceries was less than price of the larger television Thompson was given a store gift card in the amount of $139.10 -- which, was the amount leftover to be refunded to her. The offi cer’s report stated that Thompson was taken into custody as she left the store. Offi cer Margerum went on to state that during a search of Thompson’s purse she apparently found four alprazolam tablets, along with methocarbamol and lamotrigine tablets. The report explained that methocarbamol is a muscle relaxer and lamotrigine is an anti-epileptic drug. Although neither of those medications are listed as narcotics, they do require a prescription. “She did not have any proof of prescription, or proper prescription containers on her person or in her purse,” stated the offi cer. Thompson has also been trespassed from the department store, added the offi cer.
