By European Union in the Pacific Today is the International Francophonie Day (French: Journée internationale de la Francophonie), which celebrates the French language and Francophone culture around the world. It is estimated that around 220 million people speak French worldwide. French is the official language in 29 countries but the International Organisation of the Francophonie counts as many as 77 countries as members and observers. There are about 400,000 French speakers in the Pacific, mainly in the French territories of New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia and also in Vanuatu.
