By Friday, November 1, public universities in Nigeria have entered the fifth month of no activity. This followed the strike by the Academic staff Union of Universities to protest the blatant refusal of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement. This is about the longest in the history of this country. We toy with the future of our nation by keeping our ivory towers closed. A cross- section of Nigerian students have been idling away at home while our so-called leaders send their children to universities abroad. They lack the sheer political will to confront this challenge and solve it once and for all. To cap it all, the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, is more concerned about being the next Rivers State Governor. The leaders of this country will pay dearly for this. President Goodluck Jonathan was a full time university lecturer, yet he is more concerned about pilgrimages instead of sitting down to tackle what appears to be his biggest challenge currently. Sadly, he watches everyday as the sector that made him what he is today decays on a daily basis. Cry, beloved country! Directnews
