By Jane Wagner & Lily Tomlin In the way Gloria Vanderbilt was born to the Manor, Paul was born to the Underground. Wild hybrid seeds from the chaotic counterculture movement of the 60’s had been haphazardly planted every which way the wind blew—only contrary to Bob Dylan’s philosophy the answers were not blowing in the wind - just more questions. Paul grew up among those seeds as they began to take root and poke through the cracked cement of the back streets of Brooklyn like tough little sprigs of social unrest. The counterculture was part of Paul’s DNA. He never observed it as an outsider looking in - it was always there like water to a fish. In a similar way, the underground was Paul’s playground. Forgive the mixed metaphors but one metaphor is simply not enough to describe Paul. Amazingly, Paul took most of these historic photographs with a cheap Kodak Brownie & 110 Instamatic. He snapped away overcoming the limitation of these simple tools with his artist’s eye, his artist’s intuition and a kid’s enthusiasm to capture memories of growing up. He was unaware that these photographs would ever take on the significance they have manifested in this beautiful book. Paul Zone was there like a cross between ‘Zelig’ and ‘Forrest Gump’ like a fly on a wall at Max’s Kansas City & CBGB. These amazing photographs serve as social documents of a subterranean world. Paul’s playground was the wild west of New York counter culture where creative destruction was becoming fine art and hipness was being taken to new highs. We love you Paul. We love this book, and you will too! -Jane Wagner & Lily Tomlin Paul Zone PLAYGROUND Lethal Amounts Gallery Show Downtown Los Angeles / June 28-July 31 2014
