By Jeff Arnold Times Record • jarnold@swtimes The suspect in a 2006 stabbing death of a Fort Smith man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in Sebastian County Circuit Court. Jorge Flores-Andres, 30, stabbed to death 33-year-old Jose Laredo Lopez on July 30, 2006, at a Fort Smith residence before Flores-Andres fled the area, according to a police report. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Flores-Andres the next day, but he wasn’t captured until last year, when he was arrested Nov. 7, 2011, in Charlotte, N.C., on suspicion of assault by pointing a gun and resisting a public officer, according to the Mecklenburg County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office website. When he was arrested in Charlotte, Flores-Andres told officials there his name was Fernando Laureano Andres, with a birth date of July 4, 1982, according to a police report. Flores-Andres has used multiple aliases and birth dates over the years, according to court documents. He was known to friends in Fort Smith as Jorge Flores and used the alias Johnny Trujillo to find employment. Fort Smith police detective Adam Creek, with the assistance of a translator, interviewed Flores-Andres on Nov. 21, two weeks after Flores-Andres was arrested in North Carolina. Flores-Andres told Creek that Lopez approached him and his girlfriend, whose children were with her, at a Fort Smith park on July 30, 2006, and began giving them “a hard time,” before Flores-Andres left with his girlfriend and the children to avoid further conflict, according to a police report. When they left, Lopez began closely following them in his vehicle, which upset and scared Flores-Andres’ girlfriend and her children, who Flores-Andres dropped off at the residence he shared with them, according to a police report. Flores-Andres told Creek he then drove to Lopez’s residence in the 1100 block of North J Street to talk it out or “mess him (Lopez) up,” according to a police report. When he arrived, Flores-Andres told Creek he took a knife that he had in his truck with him when he confronted Lopez, and the men began to fight. During the struggle, Flores-Andres said Lopez began to choke him so he took the knife from his pocket and “hit” Lopez with it multiple times, but he didn’t know how many times because he was angry, according to a police report. Flores-Andres had no explanation for why he voluntarily confronted a man much larger than him he claimed to fear or why he took a knife he knew he would end up using if there was a physical confrontation, except that he was fed up with Lopez, according to a police report. Flores-Andres told police he fled to North Carolina after killing Lopez because he had friends there.
