By Liz Torres - I am writing this commentary to thank the many local and renowned star personalities, sportsmen, corporations, small firms but, mostly to the wonderful individuals that have taken the time out of their busy schedules to sign a petition named SAVE HMS EDINBURGH. In writing this I do not want to create a politics of fear, or use tactics for political terrorism. But if we do not act, a bygone era will pass in which a ship the last in her class will be destroyed. This idea was originated by Paul Gibb, who served on this ship and hearing of her pending decommission and demise, set out to try and save her. Meanwhile, at the same time, Graham Whyte, a civilian had the same idea and wrote to HMS Government of Petition and filed his request on behalf of the ship. These two individuals from totally different backgrounds but, with the same notion that something wonderful could come out of this action. The connection: A website named The Spirit of Leithers a Face Book site that came about from an internet web page called Oldleithers. John Stewart the founder of this site sadly passed away 8 months ago. Now with the webmaster gone, his son Alan took up the reins and moved the old site into the 21st century, FACEBOOK. With the help of Graham and another computer savvy friend who has given his time Fraser Parkinson, helped Alan get THE SPIRIT OF LEITHERS of the ground. Both Graham and Paul were contributors to the old leithers, and NOW the new Face Book page. This idea grew into a movement and a Face Book page SAVE HMS EDINBURGH became a reality, and so with the many people from all walks of life lending support, our petition has gained momentum. A local born Leither PETER SELLAR wrote this poignant poem. H.M.S. Edinburgh You see below a fighting ship, that’s heading to be scrapped. And the people trying to save her are feeling pretty strapped. Her name is H.M.S, Edinburgh, and they want to bring her home. And dock her at the Port of Leith, where visitors will be shown. How the ship has served this sceptered isle, with many seamen brave. So please sign their petition, your signature they crave. Alongside the Britannia she will memorialize seamen all. Brave warriors who left this shore in answer to the call. So many wars have come and gone, and many seamen died. Left many children fatherless, and many widows cried. The petition is listed on this site and we want everyone to know. Your signature will mean so much, “So Please”, we need you so. THIS IS THE BASIC LETTER I HAVE BEEN ASKING THE PEOPLE TO READ. This is a letter to ask my fellow Scots and citizens of the United Kingdom a favor and sign the below. petition to keep a wonderful old lady, the last of her kind HMS EDINBURGH berthed in Leith next to HMS Britannia. You can read all about it on SAVE HMS EDINBURGH a face book site, that explains in detail the struggle to keep this GRAND OLD DAME from sinking. We as a people, are trying with all of our might to keep what belongs to us, and as A nation know better than most the uphill fight and what that entails? Please believe me I am not asking for money, just an endorsement, just read the site I mentioned and if you agree sign. The conditions are you have to be a UK or duo citizen (they failed to mention this little detail), or resident. So, if you like what you read please sign and mention it to fellow British supporters on your wonderful site. Just LIKE our petition, we can do it, but time is running out for this wonderful old lady who took care of our little island with her big heart, please do not let her be abandoned and made into razor blades. epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/50317 HMS EDINBURGH TO BE KEPT AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION IN LEITH DOCKS, BESIDE ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA. -... epetitions.direct.gov.uk We, the undersigned wish, HMS EDINBURGH be berthed permanently in Leith Docks, once decommissioned.
