By Patti Slaughter BROOKVILLE — Ruthanne Barbazzeni, who has been the assistant principal at Brookville Area High School, is now the high school principal. She will be replacing Bob Rocco, who has accepted a position as superintendent of the Ridgway Area School District. Barbazzeni was named principal Monday night at a special meeting of the Brookville Area School Board. She will assume the duties of principal effective October 24, at an annual salary of $80,000. She was hired as assistant principal in December 2009, coming to Brookville from the Clearfield School District. After several months of negotiations, the board approved a collective bargaining agreement with the Brookville Area Education Association. The board approved the tentative agreement at last month’s meeting. It was later approved by the teachers, pending correction of some language in the contract. The one-year contract gives the teachers a 2.54 percent salary increase during the current school year, and provides for an addition day in the school year and well as parent conference times in the evenings. A number of other personnel matters were also approved at the meeting. — Patricia Eaton was employed as a child(ren) specific aide at $9.25/hour. She will be assigned to the high school in a new position created due to student needs. — Matt Sharp was transferred to a full-time custodian I position, created by the termination of a custodian. Kathleen Wolfe will be transferred to Sharp’s position. Both will remain at their current rate of pay. — Supplement contracts were approved for winter sports: Girls’ basketball: Mark Powell, head coach, $4,337; Madison Hill, volunteer. Wrestling: Nick Deloia, first assistant coach, $2,802 and Scott Park, assistant coach, $2,364. Boys’ basketball: Kevin Wolfe, head coach, $4,337 and Dan Ion, assistant coach, $2,364. — Added to the list of day-to-day substitutes were Ciara Irons of Oak Ridge, elementary teacher; Rose Graffius of Punxsutawney, math and elementary; Julie Thornton of Brookville, child(ren) specific aide; Sonya Trayer of Mayport, health aide; and Abby Park of Brookville, teacher, emergency certification. — The board accepted the resignation of Brittany (Beyer) Lucas, health/clerical aide, effective October 20. — Added to the list of approved school police officers was Curtis Drake. — The board approved a $100/month cell phone allowance for Superintendent Robin Fillman, to cover the cost of her personal cellular/data phone and service that is also used for district purposes. The allowance is in addition to her regular salary. — Wanda Smith was approved as a substitute bus/van driver for Yale Transportation. — the board tabled action on a request for a van driver to be accompanied by a four-year-old child in her care. The child is not the driver’s natural child, and the board wants more information about the situation. In other action: — the board approved an “Abstinence and Character Education Program” for sixth graders. The program covers healthy relationships and making healthy choices. — the board approved a three-year agreement with Transfinder to provide routing software for use in the district’s transportation program. The annual cost will be $3,998.34. — the board approved the purchase of new band uniforms, which were included in this year’s budget under special projects. Because of the cost involved, bids will be accepted. The board also discussed the possible need to provide free or rental instruments for students who cannot afford to purchase a band instrument. Board member Steve Neil raised the question, noting that equipment is purchased for all sports players, but not for band members. The board agreed to look into the matter, with board president Kerith Strano Taylor suggesting that there might be families in the district who have instruments that are no longer being used tucked away in a closet or attic and might consider donating the instruments to the school. — the board authorized business administrator Ellen Neymen to receive assistance from former administrator Jason Barnett in the completion of the annual financial report and preparation of financial statements for the auditor. Barnett will be paid a per diem rate of $450, for a maximum of five days, retroactive to October 6. — the board agreed to pay former superintendent Sandra Craft for her unused sick days. She had accumulated 83.25 sick days at the time of her retirement, to be paid at a rate of $75/day, for a total of $6,243.75. — the board approved a trip to Nashville, TN, for Concert Choir and Orchestra members. The trip will be taken in April 2015. The cost to the district will include substitutes for the faculty chaperones. — approved as board-recognized booster clubs were Soccer Boosters, Wrestling Boosters (Mat Club), Basketball Boosters (Raider Roundball Club), Softball Boosters and Swimming Boosters. Each group has submitted the board-required paperwork. — the board approved a request by board member Frank Bartley to apply for membership on the Federal Relations Network, which provides local school boards with timely information regarding education issues. Seven school board members from Congressman Glenn Thompson’s district will be appointed. Following the meeting an executive session was held to discuss student discipline issues. The next regular meeting of the Brookville Area School Board will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, October 20 in the LGI room at Hickory Grove.
