By Patti Slaughter BROOKVILLE — There was good news and not-so-good news for the Brookville Area School Board at its first meeting of the new year. The good news was that there may be no need for a large tax increase this year; the bad news was that there will be a significant increase in the cost of health insurance for district employees. Business manager Ellen Neymen told the board that under the Act 1 timeline, the board must have its preliminary budget ready for display by January 29. This year’s Act I Index will allow only a maximum 2.6 percent (0.7312 increase) if the board chooses not to apply for any exemptions, which would allow a higher tax increase. “My recommendation would be to use the opt out resolution, and that means you would be signing off, saying that you were not going to be raising taxes more than the adjusted index, 2.6 percent,” she said.
