By Rev. Philip Lee Erickson A Refutation: Un-Common Sense The problem here is a very important and subtle distinction. Please take time to think about it, so we can stop spreading this horrible idea. The relationship of government to citizen is very different than the relationship between citizens. In the government to citizen relationship, no citizen can be required to prove their innocence to their government. We must be presumed innocent and proven guilty. I hope that no one would want to change this; if you do, it changes lots and lots of things about how we relate to the government that is of, for and by the people. The relationship between you and your employer is quite different. It is one of citizen to citizen. Your employer is not bound to presume your innocence. The employer is free to presume guilt and require that you prove innocence. Thus, it is unconstitutional to require a citizen on welfare to prove his or her innocence to the government; the government is legally bound to assume the citizens innocence. It is not illegal or unconstitutional for another citizen to presume you are guilty and demand proof of innocence if you wish to work for them. If you dont like this, you are free to go and work for someone else. ...and now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
