By Ryan Troutman — Herald Correspondent First year head coach Chris Miller and Spartanburg traveled to South Pointe in a battle of unbeatens. In a defensive struggle, the Vikings pulled away late with 10 points in the forth quarter for a 20-9 win over the Stallions Friday night. Spartanburg got on the board in the first quarter after a bad snap by the Stallions’ punt team. Spartanburg took over at the South Pointe 20 with 8:44 remaining in the quarter, but lost 2 yards in three plays and had to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Ben Rivers. The Vikings added a touchdown on a 76-yard run by Tavien Feaster. It was a draw play with a couple of missed tackles that led to a quick 10-0 lead for Spartanburg. South Pointe got on the board late in the first half when John Massey scooped up a fumble and scampered 34 yards for an easy score. The defensive touchdown was the only one of the night for the Stallions, as the offense couldn’t get to the end zone. The Stallions took advantage of another Vikings miscue in the third quarter with a safety after a snap flew past the punter and out of the back of the end zone. Trailing by 1 with the fourth remaining, it looked like South Pointe could inch back, but the Stallions were unable to generate any offense. Spartanburg tacked on a field goal in the fourth, then added a late touchdown. South Pointe stopped Spartanburg on a third-and-6 with 6:17 remaining in the game. It appeared as though the Vikings were going to kick another field goal to go up by seven points, but a penalty by the Stallions for having too many players on the field gave the Vikings a first down and they were able to go ahead and add another score for the final margin. The Stallions have a week off before facing Fort Mill in their first region game of the year. “We have to figure out some answers as a football team,” said South Pointe coach Strait Herron. “We did not play well tonight, so it is my job to get us ready for Fort Mill.
