By Shawn Ashley McNutt to join Fallin’s staff Former Oklahoman capitol correspondent Michael McNutt will join Gov. Mary Fallin’s staff. Alex Weintz, Fallin’s communications director, confirmed McNutt’s hiring Wednesday and said he will begin his duties Sept. 6. According to a release from Fallin’s office, McNutt will serve as press secretary. He will join Weintz and Deputy Press Secretary Alex Gerszewski in the governor’s press office. McNutt has worked nearly 30 years for The Oklahoman, including eight years at the paper’s capitol bureau. He covered governors Fallin and Brad Henry, as well as the House of Representatives, various state agencies and a number of political campaigns. Before joining the capitol bureau, he served as The Oklahoman’s assistant news editor and assistant city editor. He has also worked in the newspaper’s Enid bureau and for newspapers in Enid and Rolla, Missouri. More recently, he was moved from the capitol bureau to the paper’s courts beat and his title changed to “senior reporter.” Fallin said in a press release that McNutt’s experience, depth of knowledge and passion for communicating information will serve him well on her staff. He replaces Aaron Cooper who was named Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s director of public affairs in July and becomes the latest Oklahoman staffer to enter state service after a stint in the capitol bureau.
