By Sikkim Govt GMC, the 1st Municipal Corporation to set up an e-waste collection center The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) in coordination with the Department of Information Technology organized the inauguration of e-waste collection centre at the GMC office complex at Deorali. The Hon’ble Minister, Urban Development & Housing Department, Shri N.K Subba, was the Chief Guest for the occasion. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the Secretary, RM&DD, Principal Director-cum- Secretary/DIT, Principal Scientist, State Pollution Control Board, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councilors and officials from HRDD. The Chief Guest inaugurated the e-waste collection centre which will serve as a store house for all the e-waste generated (which has no resale value in the local market) in all government departments and private organizations in the State. The inauguration ceremony was followed by a welcome address by the Chief Municipal Commissioner with a presentation by the Joint Director/DIT, Shri S.T Wangdi, on the E-waste management in which he highlighted the dangers and challenges of e-waste, present scenario of e-waste in Sikkim and the concept of recycling of e-waste products. He concluded the presentation with the following important points- Reuse and recycling of electronic equipment is a beneficial alternative than disposal, Providing incentives for producers to design products that are less wasteful, contain fewer toxic components, and are easier to disassemble, reuse, and recycle and Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) should be enforced for producers to buy-back, reuse or recycle their e waste items, Awareness of e-waste. The Principal Director cum Secretary/DIT, Shri Rajesh Verma also presented a talk on the e-waste management. He proposed the following line of action: • Issue of Notification from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), making it illegal for e-waste to be handed over to scrap dealers or sending it to landfills. All e-waste to be compulsorily be sent to the collection center at the GMC. • A compactor to be installed to facilitate ease of transportation of e-waste collected in the collected center. • Creating of awareness amongst the public for safe and proper disposal of the e-waste. The Chief Guest during the occasion congratulated the GMC and the DIT for the initiatives taken to set up an e-waste collection centre which he said will lead towards a greener, better and a healthier life for the entire citizen in the State. He gave his valuable inputs by mentioning that compulsory instructions should be given to all departments and public in general for safe disposal of e-waste, more such e-waste collection centers to be set up at Nagar Panchayats in other districts, formation of a Committee by the GMC comprising of officials from IT department, Authorized dealers. The Chief Guest further mentioned that awareness should be created amongst all and most importantly responsibility should be carried out by all for the betterment of the citizens and the State. The occasion concluded with a vote of thanks by the Assistant Municipal Commissioner.
