By Simon Masaba POLICE have deployed 3000 officers to ensure the safety of football fans, ahead of the Uganda- Liberia World Cup qualifier set for Saturday at the Mandela national stadium Namboole. Counter terrorism police unit will man the long winding queues at entrances to the stadium. Kampala East regional Police Commander, Musa Nabende chaired a six hour security meeting with senior police officers on how security will be implemented ahead of the international qualifier. Three mobile communication and surveillance vans fitted with long range visual cameras will be stationed outside the stadium as security officers keenly monitor the mammoth crowds streaming into the facility. A number of mobile police cells to detain petty thieves will also been put in place. “In light of terror threats, we don’t want to take chances. We have our forces and equipment for operational and emergency response ready to ensure that everyone is safe,” Nabende said. Soccer fans, Nabende said, will have to adhere to strict traffic guidelines with no cars, other than those with accredited, to access the stadium. Meanwhile, 42,000 tickets have been put on sale in various points in the country. The ordinary ticket will go for sh12,000 while a VIP category is billed at sh33,000.
