By Stuart Imrie Staveley U11 Blues held to second draw in a row. A brand new opponent visited Chantry Fields as Millhouses Juniors FC arrived on Sunday to test Staveley MWFC U11 Blues in only the second home game of the season. A fixture we hadn’t seen before faced the blues as they went in search of the season’s second win that has been so richly deserved at times. We also welcomed debutant George Thomson into the blue and white stripy fold, welcome to Staveley MWFC George! In almost every fixture so far we’ve seen a similar start from Staveley, racing out of the traps at 100 mph, passing the ball well into space, creating chances seemingly every minute and today was no different. Early first half goals are guaranteed from Staveley these days as we see oppositions buckle under instant Staveley pressure, todays opener came courtesy of striker Lewis Imrie, who burst quickly into the Millhouses area to slot home with only two minutes on the clock. The visitors however were still an unknown quantity having not had much of a share of possession as the early minutes ticked away, but we didn’t have to wait long to find that they too carried an attacking threat with a string of attacks that kept the defence and keeper Ben Collins busy, whose safe hands retained the Staveley lead until the 9th minute when a wet, zippy ball slipped impossibly through his gloves, allowing an extremely fortunate Millhouses forward to strike it lucky and find the net, levelling the score at 1-1. From where I’d been stood it was Staveley who had enjoyed the upper hand half way through the first half, with further attacks coming, creating fresh chances for many of the usual suspects, with Kian Delaney coming closest as a cleared corner ball found its way 20 yards out and was driven sweetly back goalwards, only narrowly missing its target. Millhouses defended with great gusto as the home side continued to search for their second but once again the strain became too much as Lewis Imrie’s corner curved its way loftily toward the near post, cruelly skimming off a defenders head and into the goal, the blues were back in the driving seat, I would leave that one to the dubious goals panel but……..Ah well ya know ;-) Staveley sustained their positive approach as half time loomed with further attempts to increase the scoreline, ever dominant Cam Dovison was unfortunate not to stretch the advantage having his shot stopped as the referee stopped the clock. Half Time: Staveley MWFC 2 v 1 Millhouses Juniors FC The half time break is fast becoming reminiscent of the Bermuda Triangle of late, with largely dominant first half Staveley sides emerging slightly aloof into second periods. The visitors were quick to capitalise on the Blues slow start, mirroring the swift attacking opening they’d been a victim of at the start of the match, following a defensive mistake they beat the keeper to even the tally with the half only a minute old. Much like last week’s meeting with Rother Valley both sides struggled to improve their score with the focus more on each sides defence, both sets of rear guard fought well to deny rival attacks as the match became a tense end to end affair, evening itself out arguably fairly as the full time whistle sounded. Consistency is certainly the key we’re looking for, knowing that chances and goals always come in the first half, carrying that across the Bermuda half time break will come soon as the lads continue to adjust to the larger pitch sizes and settle into their positions. On the whole though another enjoyable display from the lads, one point is better than none and only being 3 points off 3rd place we still have a lot to play for this season, well done again lads! Vamoooooss!!! Full Time: Staveley MWFC 2 v 2 Millhouses Juniors FC Scorers: Lewis Imrie (2) Man of the Match: Kian Delaney
