By all accounts, the new movie Twelve Years A Slave is remarkable. Well written, superbly filmed, directed and acted. Its the story of a free black man who was kidnapped and pressed into slavery for 12 years. I hope that film goers understand that this is still happening around the world. Its happening to men, women and children in African mines, armies and oil fields, certainly, but in Eastern Europe and Asia particularly to women, who are subjected to the most degrading and horrifying forms of slavery, and then, after their usefulness is worn out, they are generally retired by murder. They are being sold under your noses right here in America. Slavery is by no means an historical artifact; it is very much alive. If you see this movie, channel your outrage not only into working on cultural racism, but find some way into the organizations that are helping free men and women from slavery- today. Make choices in where the goods you purchase originate. Dont let the blood of kidnapped and enslaved children, men and women soil your childrens Christmas presents. I dont think Jesus would approve.
