By courtesy of Bob Moke, heres Ben Selvins orchestra performing Pickin Cotton under the name of Paul Whiteman (https://m.youtube/watch?v=PI1on7jV5WY) with Irving Kaufman & a vocal trio. Although the lyrics includes brief racial stereotypical references uncommon for the times (i invite you to ignore the vocal refrain from the minute 1:22 to the minute 2:00 of the video), the recording is wonderful as Selvin uses a superb Bill Challis arrangement, which he recorded on July 2 from 1928 in New York to fulfil a contractual agreement that Whiteman was unable to manage (as it happened with the July 20 of 1928 session) & it went issued on Columbia 1464-D, british Columbia 5242, australian Columbia 07013 & japanese Columbia J-535 under Whitemans name. Bill Challis suggested that among the musicians used on those 2 Ben Selvin sessions under Whitemans name were Tommy Gott & Leo McConvilles trumpets, Sammy Lewis & Charlie Butterfields trombone, Andy Sannella, Alfie Evans & Arnold Brilharts clarinets & saxes. Hope youll enjoy this arrangement (although i recommend you to ignore the lyrics), by the way!
