By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: HEBREWS 11:9,KJV God ordered him to leave his home only to bring him to an open and occupied countryside, Canaan? Why not a city with foundations built by God? The man went ahead of God and left the place designated for him. Faith is not unfounded zeal! It is based on what God has said to you. If God has said, ‘For now, this is your place’, kindly stay there. Don’t go zealously ahead of God because you could easily be headed to Egypt! He went southwards, came to Bethel and built an altar between Bethel and Hai. This man had two things always with him, a tent (tabernacle) and an altar! The tent suggested that he was not there to stay forever; he was on the move, a sojourner- a pilgrim. The altar points to worship! As he moved with his tent, he also PITCHED the altar of worship. For us also, we are SOJOURNERS, pilgrims here on earth. We are not to stay forever, we are on the move. We must remember that as we move around, we must lift up a sacrifice of praise by our altar Jesus Christ as an act of worship! As he moved further south, away from Sychem where God showed him, famine struck! Trust me he was so close to EGYPT than SYCHEM! The problem of moving away from God’s plan because we feel He has disappointed us is that WHEN famine strikes, we are normally closer to Egyptian compromise than to God’s original plan. When famine strikes (because it will always strike), it would be better if it finds us in God’s original place and plan. He will be faithful and keen to provide for us there. But when famine strikes and we are found lingering in the borders of Egypt looking for cities with foundations constructed by God, we are in danger of Egyptian contamination! As a human being, Abraham was caught up in wishful thinking rather than the original faith he had. He wished God would have given him a city, instead of an occupied open country side. This reflects a place many of us have been in life. Has God ordered you to stay in a certain place for this season? I pray that in faith you will sojourn there in obedience. Thinking that God is taking too long to give you progress or increase should not be entertained. It can make you unpitch your tent and go ahead of God, but brother, people with such an attitude always forget the ALTAR, when they see Egypt yonder!
