By international standards, Botswana is ranked as a middle income - TopicsExpress

By international standards, Botswana is ranked as a middle income economy with many attributes such as relative peace and freedoms [ the Kalafatis killings notwithstanding]. But after more than 47 years of independence and 20 years since graduating from the United Nations LDC [only 2 other countries have graduated: Maldives, 2011; Cape Verde 2007) we still have major problems in human resources and housing: both of which problems are critical to our prospects for economic diversification and sustainable growth. the nation has done better than most african countries in terms of providing basic education, but has fallen greatly short in terms of generating the skills that matter for the growth of industry. The majority of batswana live under housing conditions which fall far short of the UN standards for adequate housing. Yet providing or these two critical social development needs has potential for creating great economic value. Are the political parties even addressing these issues in their contest for state power? And are the voters raising these as their political demands?
