By learning their names, grasses become like old friends in the grand community of Nature: Indian Grass towers over the plains, growing up to 7 tall. It is one of the dominant grasses of the tallgrass prairie, commonly found on roadsides of northeast Nebraska. Big Blue Stem is another giant grass of the prairie. People of the plains once used this grass to treat indigestion. The photo shows why it is also called Turkey-Foot Grass. While Im out foraging, I often imagine what the landscape would have been like 200 years ago, when the plains were a deep sea of grasses waving in the wind and there were no telephone poles, wires or fences blocking the magnificent view.
