By mid-December, I was worried that I wouldnt have a favorite - TopicsExpress

By mid-December, I was worried that I wouldnt have a favorite album of the year. I had picked up a few albums that were released in 2014, but didnt feel strongly about any. Finally, just a couple weeks ago I received a package in the mail that Im crazy about. My favorite musical discovery this year has been the roster of Ghost Box Records. Ive picked up albums from The Focus Group, Pye Corner Audio, and several of the labels Study Series and Other Voices Series of 7 records. Ive loved other record labels, but there is more of a sense of identity with Ghost Box than any other label Ive dug into. The sound of each band is similar, there is a lot of collaboration between artists, and the design work of Julian House gives each release continuity with aesthetic. Ghost Box doesnt just sound like the soundtrack to a series of lost films; it sounds like the soundtrack to an entire lost world. All that being said, because it was this year, From Out Here by The Advisory Circle is my de facto Album of 2014. (Note: The attached video is actually for a song from the 2011 album As the Crow Flies, but nothing on From Out Here has a video.)
