By studying the metabolic state of single cells in skin tissue, researchers were able to uncover how the circadian clock regulates a process known as oxidative phosphorylation, which can create oxygen radicals. It does so by shifting the timing of cell division within stem cells so that the stages which are more vulnerable to DNA damage are avoided during times of maximum oxidative phosphorylation.
