By the mid-70s southern rock music was successful on the pop charts and was accepted on Top 40 radio. The ZZ Top sound in the 1970s was on the southern rock fringe. Gibbons, Hill, and Beard enjoyed being a bit edgy and found a devoted audience as their sound evolved. The trios early sound was rooted in blues and typically expressed in boogie rock style. That sound was distinctive and infectious. My ear was drawn to the early single releases of Francine and La Grange but these found difficulty in climbing the pop charts. With the 1975 release of Tush from the Fandango! album, I thought ZZ Top found a huge winner. However, it stalled at #20 and disappeared from the Billboard Hot 100 after only 9 weeks. It would take nearly another 10 years before ZZ Top registered real commercial success with a series of singles from the Eliminator album.
