By the time I was done as a PACE Instructor I had made 9 transits through The Ditch. It was so routine for East Coast ships that they never bothered with the Suez Safari cards and certificates while I was deploying. Much has changed since my last transit 20 years ago -- now there are bridges across the Canal. USS SAN JACINTO CG56, seen here, was in the SARATOGA Battle Group with my ship YELLOWSTONE during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm when we made 4 transits in 1990 and 91. Never thought I would miss this sight. I was wrong.
