By the time I was six years old, around /60 and /61, my dad had taught me to identify and gather fiddleheads, wild leeks, wild garlic, morels, puffballs, and watercress, to name a few. We lived under the rocks, which is to say *below the beautiful and very long Niagara Escarpment. We had to walk back a few fields to get to the bluff. There, we would drink spring water as it flowed directly from the rock and into a small creek (which is also where we got the watercress). He would also have us pick dandelion leaves for salad, and every single dandelion flower in the yard, to make wine. Dad however, was never known for his patience, and opened the wine long before its time. Since we had helped to make it, we had to sample it. It was a murky and indescribable colour, which I can still see but cant name. It tasted terrible. But thanks Dad, for all the great forays into the gathering of the bounty of the wilds.
