By veteran Israeli activist Reuven Kaminer - מאת ראובן קמינר Neither Bibi nor his cohorts have the faintest idea of the social dynamite that they are playing with. They are fighting the last war while the price of this one may not be the normal return to things as they were. The masses will eventually confront the basic problems of Israel, but the bulk of the middle class might well decide to get the hell out of here much before then. ------ Israel : Life Between Protective Edges Reuven Kaminer One of the strange elements in this war is that Israel was unable to propose a logical, coherent set of war aims. The need to keep on fighting to eliminate the tunnels appeared well into the ground offensive. The tunnels were so far off the wall that the discovery of their strategic importance is going to be the subject of a number of high level committees of inquiry. This is a future headache for the Israeli establishment but probably only a minor difficulty in the light of more serious difficulties. The results of this adventure have the potential of changing the very nature of Israeli life. This nature is in the process of shedding almost all of its liberal, socio-economic strong points for its middle class citizens. Wars which generate more questions than answers may be fatal for the cohesion of Israel as a society and endanger its attraction for a strong middle-class presence and ethos. Israel may become a society which is not fit to live in for certain critical sections of the population. I am referring mainly to that section of the population which needs to see itself as living in a relatively secure liberal society. I am talking about the large section of the citizenry who can choose not to stay and live here in Israel when this country no longer meets their minimum existential needs. Neither Bibi nor his cohorts have the faintest idea of the social dynamite that they are playing with. They are fighting the last war while the price of this one may not be the normal return to things as they were. The masses will eventually confront the basic problems of Israel, but the bulk of the middle class might well decide to get the hell out of here much before then.
