Bylines and Byways MORE FROM 1000 ISLANDS Im plugging for this as Agusan has potentials for its waterways. Theres Lake Mainit which is beautiful (the deepest lake in the country) and ranks first in tourism potential for the Agusan del Norte province, but still awaits development. The Agusan River is the most navigable stream in the country, but after the logging boom has been scarcely used. If you want life in the rough, with incomparable tropical biodiversity, there is the vast Agusan Marsh, proclaimed as a wetland of international importance. Butuans waterways are the most extensive of any city in the Philippines, and again it waits its chance for development. The word agusan is translated into a place where the water flows or a waterway, so we dont have that moniker if it did not describe a geographic fact. Tobermory, Thousand Islands, Hamilton Harbourfront, Toronto Island, at least these places in Ontario that I have seen and enjoyed, are earning the tourist dollars. Theres a lesson there for our domestic tourism efforts. They all rely on their innate beauty, extra care in development and maintenance, and lots of trees and lawns (avoid large cement structures if you can help it, for Gods sake). And beautiful houses along the waterfront. Boating, camping, just sitting down to enjoy the breeze, fly fishing - what more can one ask?
