Bài viết của IELTS Vietop cho đề thi ngày 20/9/2014 :D Some people think that introducing new technology can improve people’s quality of life in developing countries. However, others believe that free education should be offered. Discuss both views and give your opinion. When it comes to how to improve life quality of citizens living in developing countries, there are typically two opposing views to this matter. One supports the introduction of new technology whilst the other advocates free education as the only way forward. I would like to first focus on discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the two ideas before drawing my personal opinion about the matter. Firstly, there is no denying to the convenience that advanced technology has brought to human kind in the past decades. With the help of the Internet, people now can instantly connect and communicate with their friends and families anywhere in the world via their personal electronic devices. The Internet has also enabled individual to access an insurmountable amount of knowledge online at a click of a button. This has the potential to drastically close the development gap between impoverished and developed countries. However, as people are getting used to having the support of technology in their lives, they have also become overly dependent on it to perform daily doable tasks such as washing dishes or vacuuming. This is specifically not ideal for developing countries whose development is currently heavily reliant on labour work. On the contrary, free education offers a different kind of benefits to developing countries. That is a chance to raise the level of literacy and numeracy and the bar of public awareness in general. As a result, the likelihood of breakthrough ideas generated by highly educated society to solve pressing issues in developing countries like water shortage or food safety is much higher. Even so, limited resources of facilities, human capital and finance make it challenging for these countries to manifest the idea. That is not to mention that higher amount of taxes would need to be paid to support this scheme, which may make many people feel uncomfortable doing so. In conclusion, whilst both views have their up and down sides, I am of the opinion supporting the benefits that technology has brought and will continue to bring to developing countries despite its setbacks. As for the idea of free education, I am not positive about its potentials due to the aforementioned restraints, even though it may appear to be a better option in long term.
