Béal an Átha Móir Seán Ó hEislin Comhghairdeas & Good Luck Congratulations to Ballinamore SOH Senior Team who defeated Aughnasheelin in the Intermediate Football Championship on Saturday gone. This victory earns SOH a semi final birth where they will take on Ballinaglera in Pairc Seán at 5pm on Saturday 6th September. Aughnasheelin started the match much brighter than SOH and quickly ran in a score of 1-2 to SOH 2 points. Wayne McKeon and Luke Murphy scored a couple of good points to bring the match to 1-3 to 4 points in favour of Aughnasheelin. As the first half wore on SOH started to take control of the game and Wayne McKeon again scored a vital goal which brought the scores level just before half time. On the stroke of half time Peter Reynolds put SOH in the lead with a well taken point leaving the half time score 1-5 to 1-4 to SOH. Aughnasheelin again started the 2nd half well and were denied a certain goal by only a wonderful save from SOH Philip Farrelly. This save was the turning point of the match and 4 minutes later Liam Ferguson scored a wonderful goal for Ballinamore SOH which gave us a 2-5 to 1-4 lead. SOH remained in control and ran in a couple more points to leave the score at 2-7 to 1-5 when Aughnasheelin were granted a penalty which they missed. Mark McRory and Andrew Burn added further points to leave SOH with a 2-9 to 1-6 lead. Aughnasheelin scored 3 points to no reply with Ballinamore having a couple of excellent chances to extend their lead.With a couple of minutes to go Aughnasheelin again struck another shot wide and SOH ended the match victorious by a score of 2-9 to 1-9. Commiserations Commiserations to Ballinamore SOH Junior team whose Championship run was ended by St Mary’s on Sunday. St Mary’s, who are probably one of the favourites to win the Championship this year, put in a very strong performance with the final score of 1-14 to 0-5. Minors Well done to our Minors St Felims who completed a very impressive victory last Wednesday against Naomh Pádraig-Droim. The lads ran in 7-25 to 3-4. Hopefully they can continue this fine form against Fenagh/Gortletteragh in their next match. Comhairdeas Well done to the SOH Minor girls team on Monday night’s Championship semi final victory again Dromahair. The girls took a commanding lead in the game going in at half time winning by a score of 4-7 to 1-1. They continued their fine form in the 2nd half adding a further 2 goals and 5 points to Dromahair’s 4 points leaving the final score 6-12 to 1-5. The girls are now due to meet the winners of Carrick on Shannon vs St Josephs with fixture details to follow. Leitrim Ladies Congratulations and Good Luck to the Leitrim Ladies including SOH Sarah McLoughlin and Laura O’Dowd on their excellent victory in the All Ireland quarter final against Limerick in Offaly last Saturday. The Leitrim Ladies won by a score of 3-7 to 1-8 and have earned themselves a semi final place where they will meet Down this Saturday in Cusack Park Mullingar at 1.30pm. National Heritage Week As part of National Heritage Week, on Thursday 28th August at 830pm in Ballinamore Library, there will be a lecture by renowned local historian and clubman Seán Ó Suilleabháin. The title of this event is surnames of Leitrim where you can learn about the popular Leitrim surnames, their variants and how they came about. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. Also in Ballinamore Library, on Friday 29th August at 8pm, Noel Sweeney will be presenting his talk on Ballinamore in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The presentation will include a photographic slideshow with many unique and previously unseen photographs of the town dating back to the 1960’s.
