C. DON ADINUBA TO PETER OBI/ UCHE EZECHUKWU I am these days thoroughly embarrassed to listen to political campaign rhetoric in the state. All manner of religious and clannish sentiments dominate the air. Each politician is engaged in sectarian showmanship, trying to prove how he is more Catholic than the pope literally. The implication is that should a globally great material like Anyaoku seek to run for the governorship, he is most likely to perish the thought soon because he is Anglican in an environment overwhelmed by Catholics. Yet, here is a state which only recently elected Ezeife, a member of the Salvation Army Church which makes up far less than one per cent of the population, as its first civilian governor...But Anambra, which has for decades, been a perfect example of a homogenous state, is now becoming polarized along clannish lines as “turn-by-turn” politics, which is the bane of Nigerian politics, is now being propagated by desperate politicians. Worse, a culture of “xenophobia” is being created as highly regarded bona fide indigenes of the state are mischievously portrayed as working in cahoots with Boko Haram. Is this the kind of atmosphere in which a new economy can be created so that our people will stop moving out of the state en masse in search of better employment and business opportunities? Is this the kind of atmosphere in which medical tourism, for one, can take root and thrive?
