C Grade Match Result and Report By Snakes Alive Puckapunyal C Grade travelled to the home of Lollies Broadford, to take on Broadford Red on the High School ground. Once again with a full side of 12 bolstered with youth and experience, the boys were keen for a good performance. The toss was made and would you believe it, I lost one. I was told to have a bat, which I was going to do anyway as Broadford only had 9 players at that stage which ponders why you would bowl ? Senior opening duo of Anthony Steam Train Simcox and Darren The Tree Deeble strolled out to the pitch, only to note that the ducks had been using it for bombing practice. A quick scrape with a lump of wood had most of it removed. As per previous weeks and the fact there were a couple of fielders short, seen the pair capitalise for one of the best batting starts of the season. After the first 7 overs the score was 0/33. A couple of belated players arrived for Broadford which filled gaps, and young Troy Bradshaw started to find good line and length with pace and gentle out swing, removing the Train with a good ball. First wicket to fall for 38, Simcox out for a well made 15. The Tree was standing firm just swaying in the breeze picking up runs here and there with the occasional belt to the boundary for four. He was then joined by Phil Cludo Hudson. Well I dont think I would have liked the first ball he coped a real good nut hitting middle and leg stump for no score. Young Cuddles Deeble came to the crease eager to put on a good show batting with his father The Tree. The pair batted well together turning the strike over, until young Cuddles played down the wrong line and was out bowled. During this time I witnessed something I have never seen in my entire cricketing life. Play was stopped for a short period of time as a 4 foot Brown Snake casually crawled across the ground not far from the pitch much to the amazement of the the players. It was funny watching the fielders for the next few overs occasionally glancing over there shoulders in case the critter decided to pay another visit. I did mention to Darren if he Skyed one just yell snake and he should be ok. I shouldnt have said anything as not long after that the Tree was out caught for a well made 24. Well batted Darren. The score 4/56 off 18 overs. Mystery Ball Morgan who was also keen to make at least 1, strolled out to the middle. He was starting to look comfortable against the bowling but was unfortunately out caught. The score was 5/75 off 25 overs. Broadford Red back in the game with some good fielding and tight bowling. Returning Junior from several seasons of injuries and repairs, young Nick Frankel strolled to the centre for his first hit of the season. The young man looked the goods from the start and batted with a maturity, and worked the ball around the ground. He and Graeme The Fridge Potts who was given a licence to have a crack did not disappoint, together putting on almost 40 runs until the Fridge didnt quite get a handle on one and was out caught for a well made 18. Clint McSweeney joined young Frankel but it was only a brief interlude as McSweeney missed judged one being caught at mid off for 1. The score 7/112 of 33 overs. With only 7 overs remaining and 3 wickets a smallish total was looming as early opener Troy Bradshaw still had a couple of overs to come. In strolled the old captain at number 9. I was fortunate enough to bat with young Mr Frankel and witnessed him play some fantastic shots. He also bludgeoned a straight drive 6 which was hit with such timing that it cleared the rope with ease, and as it turned out was his first ever 6. Much to his delight he came down the non strikers end to inform myself and umpire Tree that it was his first ever 6, resulting in the bowler replying you could have bought it up on someone else Together we put on a quick fire 30 run partnership. It was unfortunate to see the young man depart from a catch to the infield, but it was a fantastic innings with a well made 42 runs. Sensational effort young man well done. A quick loss of another wicket with Tail ender specialist Chris Brown and the score resting on 9/145 with 4 overs to go. As predicted Broadford brought on early opener Bradshaw, and I was lucky enough to get a few away over the remaining overs and I finished with 27 not out. The score 9/163 of 40 overs. Very pleasing that we posted a good score and batted out the overs. Well done everyone. Clint Mcsweeney was given opening duties and started his spell well only conceding a couple of runs of his first few overs. The old captain thought he might have a trundle and picked up a couple of early wickets in his second over with 2 out bowled. Well he should have taken himself off after that as the next few overs resembled what was scrapped off the wicket before play. But not to worry as Mcsweeney started his charge of wickets with his first in his third over to a catch by young Cuddles juggling one a few times like a hot spud, but it was a cracking shot and i was pleased for him to hang onto it. The next 3 overs by Mcsweeney resulted in another 3 wickets. The opening specialist bowling within himself, bowling 2 and a catch from yours truly in close netting him figures of 4/27 off 8 overs. Well done Clint but you have been fined for not getting 5 and fined for leaving without paying your fines. The score 6/45 off 11 overs and Pucka right on top. The Fridge came on to replace Pottsy the Pie Chucker, and it would be fair to say the thermostat must have been set to 10 as he was very stiff. I have never seen a bowler bowl that well and not get a wicket. He can bend the ball a pitch width and some balls were completely unplayable. In conjunction the ball was given to young Cuddles Deeble who has been bowling well in the nets. The pair bowled well together but it was Cuddles inspirational spell, bowling a very smart line and length resulting in 3 bowled and a catch to Steam Train at 2nd slip, grasping the bowling honours with 4/11 off 5.4 overs. The Fridge frozen at 0/16 of his 8 overs. Cludo Hudson after a marathon of hints and clues was given an over but was unsuccessful. Broadford Red all out for 81. Fielding was on song with a brilliant performance all round. I would also like to thank Brad Oshea for filling in the fielding at B Grade and then making it back to field for us in C Grade. Showed great commitment to the club. Thank you. Well it was great to have a win, and once again a very enjoyable day of cricket with several great performances shared around. Good to see several big wicket hauls and some good batting totals. Thanks again all for the support and look forward to seeing you all next week. Potts over and out.
