CA-MRSA. My Week One and Life Is Good! Today, I successfully completed early stage week one of six of treatment plan for Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA-MRSA) with the goal of decolonization (removal of CA-MRSA). CA-MRSA is a resistant form of Staphylococcus that can live on the skin and cause skin infections. An abrasion or break in the skin under my arm from trimming created a portal for entry. I misdiagnosed this as “spider bites” from a recent trip to Cape Cod. Reflecting back, I should have contacted my provider much sooner as the infected “spider bites” were not getting better in a few days. My four skin infections (abscesses) caused by CA-MRSA have been treated by incision and drainage and wounds are healing nicely. Daily oral and topical nasal antibiotic therapy is proving effective against the bacteria, coupled with a daily Hibiclens antimicrobial soap with persistence wash. Next steps include continued decolonization treatment followed by three nasal swab screenings at week intervals, six weeks longer on treatment plan. Lesson learned to pay forward: contact your provider if you think you may have a skin infection. Treatment is available. BELIEVE!
