#CA4UPSC Sustainable Mountain Development Summit of Himalayan states underway in Nagaland The third edition of the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit, SMDS-III got underway in Nagaland capital Kohima last evening. The focus of the summit is on sustainable development of the Himalayan states of the country. Inaugurating the Summit, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio stressed on jointly pursuing the issue of utilizing natural resources for benefit of the present generation, while also conserving it for future generations. Mr Rio pointed to the various fears of rising sea levels, melting mountains, floods and famines and of extinction engulfing the world today and hoped that the Summit will bring out tangible solution to preserve the ecology and reverse the damage. The Sustainable Mountain Development Summit is an effort by the Himalayan states of the country, brought together by the Indian Mountain Initiative, IMI to discuss and chalk out a roadmap for sustainable development in these states, especially in view of the growing stress on the ecology. Over 300 delegates from all the Himalayan states, including North Eastern states, Uttarkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Darjeeling and representatives from various United Nation bodies are attending the three-day meet.
