CABLE and Wireless Communications (CWC) has pledged an investment of $400 million in broadband expansion and the creation of 500 skilled jobs in the Caribbean as some of the list of commitments of the new company that will be created as a result of its proposed US$3 billion acquisition of Columbus International. In a statement issued yesterday by CWC, the company said it was announcing a ground-breaking customer charter that will guide the new entity which will arise from the proposed merger with Columbus International. CWC’s CEO Phil Bentley boasted, “This merger will result in the most extensive fibre infrastructure ever constructed in the region, providing wider access to all, specifically targeting low income households.” Regarding the creation of 500 skilled jobs, Bentley said these jobs will be created “between now and 2019 through growth in its services and by reviewing current outsourcing arrangements.” Bentley said in giving customers more choices, the new company will become the leading regional supporter of net neutrality and provide full access to legal ‘over-the-top’ (OTT) services. CWC also re-affirmed its commitment for Local Number Portability (LNP), which will enable customers to exercise the freedom of keeping their telephone numbers, should they choose to switch operators. Columbus CEO Brendan Paddick added, “Our job is to keep our customers satisfied, and if we do not deliver an exceptional experience, we can’t expect their patronage.” Digicel Executive Chairman Denis O’Brien has warned the proposed merger will significantly lessen competition in six regional telecom markets and TT is one of those markets. Finance Minister Larry Howai has promised that Government will ensure that this country’s taxpayers are protected with regards to the proposed merger. CWC currently owns 49 percent of the shares in State-owned TSTT. Telecom Authority Chairman Selby Wilson said the Authority hopes to complete its review of the proposed merger next month.
