CAFE HOLLYWOOD - THE REVIEW Café Hollywood is located in the heart of the city, Dhaka’s so called “Times Square”, Banani Road 11. We, the Food Gurus, decided this would be our destination for our second iftar outing. Although Dollah could not join us, Shadmani and I were sure to review this place. We heard a lot about it and thought we should try it ourselves to see what everyone was talking about. So, on this faithful day we decided to see what Café Hollywood has to offer. The Place: Café Hollywood is located on the 2nd floor of its building and reaching it is quite easy using either a single flight of stairs or a short elevator trip. Upon reaching the floor, we saw their menu printed on a large poster outside their door covering the whole wall. This was very convenient as it allowed us to decide whether we would like to eat there or not and decide on what we would be ordering without even having to enter the restaurant. Many of the items had interesting character based names such as the Angry Birds Meal. On entering the restaurant we witnessed somewhat of a comic book heaven. The entire dimly lit restaurant was covered ceiling to floor in various comic book and video game themed furniture and decorations. Superhero lanterns were strewn about the ceiling and posters and framed photographs with themes ranging from superheroes to TV shows and even the WWE covered the walls. The area was spacious enough to accompany enough people and even had a separate smoking room. Sitting booths for 4 were shaped like the Batmobile and were enjoyable to sit in for the most part. There was a projector and a screen which is sometimes used to show movies and videos. Attached to the restaurant is a small comic book store with various toys, t-shirts, comics and other memorabilia with many attractive products not found elsewhere in Bangladesh. However, there were quite a few negatives as well. The smoking room did not have proper ventilation and every time the door was opened a thick choking cloud of cigarette smoke entered the room. There was a small children’s play area in one corner which seemed to be absolutely out of place, unnecessary, and just a waste of space. The tables of the Batmobile booths were too small and shaky to accompany the food of 4 people. The entire restaurant had only a single toilet to be shared by both men and women, and although not dirty it seemed to be too small to accommodate the number of people present. The Food: We ordered two Chicken steak and Thai noodles, a Beef steak with rice and Half BBQ Chicken with salad and extra fries. For drinks we ordered one Lemon Mojito, one Apple Iced Tea and one Lemon Iced Tea. The presentation of the food was not bad and was served looking appetizing. However, the first thing I noticed was the small quantity provided. My Half BBQ Chicken was small in size and looked more like a chicken steak although it tasted well and all the spices soaked in properly. The salad provided wasn’t a salad at all, I was given 3 thin slices of tomato and 3 even thinner slices of cucumber. The fries were alright in quantity and tasted like any other fries except that extra salt needed to be added. The chicken steak was good in texture, however the flavours did not complement each other well enough. One of the steaks seemed to be somewhat undercooked and a dark red color was seen in the meat. The Thai noodles were spicy and tasted rather well, although a larger amount could have been given. The drinks however were an absolute disaster. The Lemon Mojito had more mint in it than lemon, too much in fact. It tasted entirely of mint leaves which was rather unsettling and didn’t go down well. The Apple Iced Tea and Lemon Iced Tea did not taste like they had any tea in them at all and just tasted like apple juice and lemonade. In my opinion, the best refreshment we had was the complementary lemonade provided to us to break our fasts and the water we needed to get in order to rid our mouths of the foul tasting Lemon Mojito. The Service and Cleanliness: The service in the restaurant was good. The waiters seemed to know what they were doing and took our orders properly and promptly. Food was served on time for iftar and did not have the chance to get cold before we could break our fasts. Waiters cooperated with us if we needed anything and were courteous. The overall place was clean and well kept and felt to be a safe environment to enjoy a meal in. Wifi was available but was not functioning for some reason at the time we were there. The Pricing: The pricing seemed to be ok although quantity offered should have been more. All 4 of us had our stomachs full for about 2700tk (although I needed a portion of Shadmani’s unfinished steak to help fill me up). Overall: Overall I was semi-satisfied with Café Hollywood, it was not as good as I hoped it would be. Some of the food was good while some others weren’t so. The quantity offered should have been more for all the dishes. The drinks were an absolute waste of money and I would recommend everyone to stay away from them. You’re better off going home and spending half an hour squeezing an orange into a tea cup than ordering a drink at Café Hollywood. Would I go back again? Maybe with friends. But I would stay faaar far away from the drinks.
