CAGUIOA ADMITS GINEBRA IS “FAST AND FURIOUS” TEAM NO MORE, BUT… MANILA — While he is still the acknowledged leader of Ginebra, superstar Mark Caguioa is expecting his team to become more solid and team-oriented starting next season. In an interview with Sports Desk Online, Caguioa has accepted the reality that his once vaunted tandem with fellow ex-MVP awardee Jayjay Helterbrand is already a thing of the past now that Ginebra has infused young talents to bolster their campaign. “It’s not that we’re not in the picture. We’re just trying to build another team na parang another generation. Nasa ibang players na yun kung gusto nilang ituloy-tuloy. We just need to build on that. Yung character ng team na ibalik yung never-say-die spirit ng Ginebra,” said Caguioa. Since last season, Caguioa said he consciously made efforts to make his teammates more involved in scoring. “Kaya nga lately if you notice, I don’t take that many shots because I want my teammates to be more involved sa offense,” said Caguioa. At the moment Caguioa and his teammates are trying to familiarize themselves with the vaunted triangle system, something which rookie head coach Jeffrey Cariaso is trying to instill with the team. “Coach Jeff, he grew up with coach Tim (Cone). Why not learn from there? He won a grandslam, hopefully we could just win a championship for now,” said Caguioa. “Kung ano yung level ng San Mig hopefully we can get there. I’ve been wanting to win a championship for so long.“ Caguioa however admits that they are still in the process of fully understanding the triangle, perhaps the most successful basketball system the last two decades. Cariaso replaced Ato Agustin as Ginebra’s head coach before the start of last season’s Governors’ Cup, which meant the 41-year-old former Alaska standout had little time to instil his coaching knowhow. “It took San Mig mga ilang conferences o I think about a year. We started three weeks ago and then we start on October 19,” said Caguioa “We have a lot of time to get ready.
